Attention: Sandoval Band Parents

May 2008

                    Please mark your calendar and plan to attend the next Band Parents Meeting on Tuesday, August 5, at 7:30 p.m. in the high school band room.  Bring any ideas you have for fundraising.  Also, we will discuss upcoming band events for the 2008-2009 year.  Come join us!  Expect a great year with the BAND!

                     MUSIC ITEMS NEEDED – Do you have a music stand or band instrument not

       being used?  The band is rapidly growing and would appreciate any donations of stands or

Meridian Scholar Presidential Scholarship

Nathan Rohner has been awarded a Meridian Scholar Presidential Scholarship from Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville.

Presidential Scholarship applicants are required to be Illinois residents who have completed honors and advanced placement courses in high school, have achieved at least a 29 ACT score, and have earned a 3.75 high school grade point average or higher.  The scholarship committee at SIUE reviewed applicants' academic records, leadership qualities, and essays.  This year 464 prospective students applied for this scholarship committee, Based upon their recommendation, SIUE offered Meridian Scholarship opportunities to 31 outstanding freshman students.

As a SIUE Presidential Scholar, Nathan will receive in-state tuition for up to 15 credits hours per semester, mandatory fees, housing (shared room in residential hall), and a meal plan.  This scholarship is renewable for up to 8 semesters as long as the recipient continues to meet the program's criteria.

Nathan will begin the fall semester at SIUE in August 2008.  He plans to pursue a degree in mechanical engineering.

 

Heartland Honor Band

    Eric Galindo and Nathan Rohner, both seniors at Sandoval High School, have the honor of being selected to perform in the Heartland Band Festival at Southern Illinois University Carbondale.  The Heartland Honor Band brings together the finest musical talent of the Heartland high schools to perform music selected by the guest conductors.  This honorable performance will culminate the boys' eight year band career at Sandoval which began in the fourth grade.  Eric will be on percussion and Nathan will be playing the trombone.  The boys will rehearse with the other honor students in the Maroon Band on February 8th and 9th.  The concert at Shryock Auditorium will begin at 3:00 p.m. on February 9, 2008.

Illinois State Scholars

    Kelly Merten and Nathan Rohner have been recognized as 2008 state Scholars.  This prestigious award is given annually by the Illinois Student Assistance Commission.  Illinois State Scholar winners rank in the top 10% of the state's high school seniors from 711 high schools in all 102 counties.  Selection is based on Scholastic Aptitude Test, American College Test, and/or Prairie State Achievement Exam scores, and/or class rank at the end of the junior year.

 

DAR Winner Award

    Rachel Ahlf was named the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution Good Citizen of the class of 2008.  She was chosen by her teachers and peers for her exemplary dependability, honesty, courtesy, respect, leadership and patriotism.  She has been awarded a certificate and the opportunity to compete for a scholarship.

American Revolution Outstanding Citizen of the Class of 2008

 

    Sandoval High School’s Illinois Society of the Sons of the American Revolution Outstanding Citizen of the Class of 2008 is Kelly Merten. She was chosen by her teachers and peers for her exemplary dependability, honesty, courtesy, respect, leadership, and patriotism and will be awarded a certificate. Kelly has been a member of Beta Club, National English Honor Society, FHA, band, and Tech Prep.  She has served on the Sandoval High School Student Council, Beta Club Leadership Committee, and as class officer during her junior year.  In addition, Kelly has participated in volleyball and scholar bowl.The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Clicker Merten of Sandoval, Kelly has maintained a perfect 4.0 grade point average throughout high school, is a National High Honor Roll member, is listed in Who’s Who Among American High School Students, and is an Illinois State Scholar.Kelly will begin her pursuit of a doctorate in Pharmacy in the fall of 2008 at the St. Louis College of Pharmacy.

 

Consumer Ed Exam

 

Congratulations to Josh Oestreich for passing the Consumer Education exam.  By doing this, he has proficiencied out of the Resource Management class that is a requirement to graduate from Sandoval High School.  This exam is offered to grades 9 through 12 twice a year.  Students are allowed to participate one time per year as long as they are not currently enrolled in the class itself.  A passing score is at least 98 questions correct out of a total of 140 questions.
