 Have you heard?
Lincoln likes to read.

Now you can decide which book should be given the newest book award that the state of Illinois gives:

The Abraham Lincoln Award.

23 books have been selected and you get to choose which one you think should be awarded this award because the STUDENTS of Illinois choose.

Come to the library and by the portrait of Miss Kostanzer (the lady's portrait on the south wall) is a collection of Abraham Lincoln nominated books.  Read at least 3 and fill in a ballot for the ones you like best.  The results will be faxed to the committee in charge and in late March or early April, results will be announced.

All votes must be cast by March 1, 2009

BOOK REVIEWS TO CONSIDER

I'm a person who likes to read so I thought about once a month doing a few book reviews that are worth the time to read.  I'll include the Accelerated Reader levels and the points.  Try them, you may like them.

Not the End of the World by Geraldine McCaughrean

Ever wonder what the end of the world might look like?  This tale, a retelling of the Biblical flood, follows a super religious family led by Noah through the preparations for the event, the coming of the rains, and the months afterwards.  Timna, daughter of the family tells most of the story, followed by Shem and Japhth, her brothers, Bashemath, her sister-in-law, and various animals cooped up in the ark.  Ms. McCaughrean ends the tale not quite as the Bible tells it.  Guess you'll have to read it to find out.

The Book of Fred by Abby Bardi                                  A.R         15 points

Guess this is my time for religiously connected reading.  Mary Fred belongs to a religious sect called Fredism.  After 2 of her brothers die of preventable conditions, her parents are arrested and Mary Fred goes into foster care.  The family she ends up with is the very definition of disfuctional.  As soon as Mary Fred enters the house, changes for the good begin to happen.  Even after the unthinkable happens, Mary Fred and her foster family pull together and begin to function as a family.  The story is told by Mary Fred, her foster mother, foster sister, and foster uncle, bringing various perspectives to the tale.

The Lives of Christopher Chant  by Diana Wynne Jones  A.R. 5     13 points

Do you love Harry Potter?  Diana Wynne Jones writes wonderful tales of magic and adventure very much like Harry Potter's adventures.

Christopher is a wizard boy who doesn't know he's a wizard.  And wizards have nine lives.  So people are taking advantage of him and stealing his extra lives for their own benefits.  He is taken to Chrestomanici Castle to be trained to be wizard and then strange things begin to happen.  Among the strangest is that Christopher is to be the new Chrestomanici and that's only the beginning.

If you find you like this book, try Chrestomanci and Witch Week, also by Diana Wynne Jones. (These are not A.R. books)

The Black Rose by Tananarive Due    A.R. 6     27 points

Do you like stories about people's lives especially when they grow up to be famous?  The Black Rose tells such a story.  Sarah is a poor little girl who loses her parents when she is 6.  Her brother leaves her when she is 7, and she and her sister are forced to attempt to exist by themselves.  To cope, her sister marries a man Sarah can not stand and Sarah marries at 14 to get away from him.  Sarah's husband is killed and Sarah is forced to make a new life for her and her baby girl.  She suffers from a very dry skin condition and struggles to find a product that works.  When she can't, she develops her own and discovers so many others who need such a product.  She also discovers that she can offer freedom and employment to hundreds of women who are in the same position she was.  Does Sarah find happiness as well as wealth and power?  You'll have to read  The Black Rose  and find out.

Stargirl by Jerry Spinelli   A.R. 4.2   6 points

Do you know Stargirl?  I bet you know someone like her.  In a school which being like everyone else is normal, a new girl comes.  She stands out, in dress, in behavior, in speech, in song and in action.  Soon she has the attention of much of the school and many ordinary people begin to admire her.  She demonstrates humanity by her good manners and her caring ways.  Then she crosses the most popular kids who begin a campaign to humiliate her.  It works.  But Stargirl is not done yet.  See what makes her the most memorable person from that school that year.
