Hi, My name is Connie Mudd. I am the Librarian here at
Sandoval Grade School. Did you know that we:
serve over 300 students
-
have over 5000 books, many of them Accelerated Reader books
-
have over 3000 Accelerated Reader books between the library
shelves and hall carts
-
have over 300 videos available to any staff member for
viewing by students
-
have two computers, two photo printers with photo card
readers, digital cameras, and a scanner
-
have seven monthly magazines available to students and teachers
-
have a photo copier, laminator, stencil die cut set, comb
binding machine, tape recorders, and a TV with VCR/DVD player
constantly add to our collections of library and
Accelerated Reader books and videos
Classes come to the library 30 minutes each week. At that time
students can select a book and read magazines. They learn to use the card
catalog to locate books on the shelves. Students use computers to research
topics on the Internet for classroom reports or to type reports using the word
processor. Students are also welcome to come to the library to find an AR
book any time a class is not using the library.
The students from first grade through sixth grade participate in the
Accelerated Reader program.
The first step involves a student taking a S.T.A.R. (Standardized Test
for Assessment of Reading) test on the computer to find his or her individual
reading level. Then each student is allowed to choose a book in his or her
reading range (based on the test scores) from the Accelerated Reader
collection. After reading the book the student takes a multiple-choice
test on it on the computer. When the test is completed, the computer
displayed the student then chooses another Accelerated Reader book
and repeats the process. Watch for the monthly Top Point Earners! At
the end of each month, we have an Accelerated Reader "store" where
students can use their accumulated points like money to "buy" items.

FREE BOOKS ONLINE
There are loads of online books that can be read directly
on your computer or downloaded to electronic devices such as ipods, ereaders,
PDAs, etc. All you have to do is use a search engine, type in “free online
books” or something similar, and a list of sources will pop up. Some sources
are more user-friendly than others and some specialize in older out-of-print
books, classics, children’s stories, or other types of books. Some have other
activities in addition to books to read. Be sure to check our school web site
www.SandovalGS.org. To find the following list of
sites, go to “Faculty/Staff”, click on “Connie Mudd-Library” then scroll down
to Free Online Books. Just click on a site name and it will open for you.
If you use
http://www.google.com , go to More, then down to
Books. You can see previews of books in which some of the pages will not be
shown. Go to Advanced Search for more books.
Our
school has a site license for Sylvan Dell Books that allows students and parents
to read children’s books online. To access these books:
Go
to
www.SylvanDellPublishing.com
On
the right side of the home page, click on “School Resource Grant/Enter Site
Code”
Under “School Resource Grant” click “Enter 6-Digit Site code”
Enter S87O4K. The O is the letter, not the number.
Click the Validate Code Button.
Click on the book you want to read. When the cover appears, rapidly click the
bottom right of all the pages, even though they stay blank. This begins
loading the pages so you won’t have to wait for them to load one at a time.
Click on the Cover symbol (l<) to go to the beginning of the book.
Click F11 to enlarge to full page view.
Click on the bottom right corner to turn pages.
You
can shrink or enlarge the pages by using the blue tool bar at the top. After
enlarging, use the hand icon to move the page around.
